Why 75% of everything at the grocers is on my “off ” list.  It is our children I’m most concerned about.

The illusion of variety – A few major players own our food supply, which has been turned into an assembly line of genetically altered poultry, beef, and to a lesser extent pork.  Monsanto has made Corn, a once excellent grain, and Soybeans, a once good source of protein, a threat to new generations at the molecular level.  Made more insidious and complicated by being used in cattle feed which should be grass fed.  Corn is found under many different names, especially in processed food.   This documentary was originally aired in 2008 by PBS.   Click on the URL to view.  Don’t change settings.

EVERYONE should see this; please pass it along.  X

Watch Helen Caldicott’s video.  If you have a “short attention span”, home in at 25:53; after ten minutes it ought to shock you into paying attention to both videos.  These need to be spread to as many folks as possible.

A thirty minute search for a video I posted on gun control which had become “private”- led me to storyleak.com.  Anthony Gucciardi, the video’s author, is on both Facebook and Twitter, which I refuse to connect to.  There is no other way to contact him.

I was able to view his page at Facebook;  a link there to videos he has on YouTube, which I clicked on, resulted in this video, its title took me by storm.  It was another WTF moment.  Watch this while it is still viewable; if you can, download it.  This supersedes ISIS, the national debt, even the loss of freedom due to NDAA.

There are smart folks here on WP who (I hope) will repost this; the evidence is undeniable.  Some still think that Monsanto is a good thing.  Monsanto is mentioned, but is small potatoes compared to what happened at Fukushima.  The folks who are supposed to have our best interests in mind, have covered up the harsh reality, which is now far worse than when Fukushima melted down.  Don’t “like” this; respond!

Unbeknownst to most consumers of US corporate media, radiation in the ocean from the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster has finally reached the United States’ West Coast, impacting fisheries along the Pacific Ocean. Three years later, these and other effects of Fukushima are only beginning to appear. Helen Caldicott, former President of the Physicians for Social Responsibility, examines the radiation-related health risks, and other lasting consequences of the calamity in her new book Crisis Without End. In this talk she sheds light on these trends, giving an overview of how they impact not only the people of Japan, but the United States and the rest of the world comparing it with the ongoing Chernobyl disaster which scientists estimate has so far killed over a million people. Caldicott also shares her judgement on how these lasting impacts should impact U.S. nuclear policy. A trained physician, Caldicott is also the author of several other books, including If You Love This Planet and The New Nuclear Danger.

Mar 14 2016:  NEW source; original video became “private”

In preparation of the global March Against Monsanto, you are invited to watch our award-winning documentary Seeds of Death free.

New source: Seeds Of Death GMO’s EXPOSED – Full Documentary

This link is still valid; there is another march planned for sometime in May of this year.

The leaders of Big Agriculture–Monsanto, DuPont, Syngenta–are determined that world’s populations remain ignorant about the serious health and environmental risks of genetically modified crops and industrial agriculture. Deep layers of deception and corruption underlie both the science favoring GMOs and the corporations and governments supporting them.
This award-winning documentary, Seeds of Death, exposes the lies about GMOs and pulls back the curtains to witness our planet’s future if Big Agriculture’s new green revolution becomes our dominant food supply.

The technology of agricultural genetic engineering (GE) is the controversial practice of gene-splicing and disrupting the genetic blueprints of plants and trees in a lab, to produce patented seeds. The seeds are generally one of two types. One type, which includes Monsanto’s Roundup-resistant crops, produces plants that survive the spraying of poisons, while all the other plants around them die. The other type produces a plant that manufactures its own pest-killing poison, designed to target a specific pest.

In 1994, Monsanto’s minions in the FDA (including Monsanto lawyer, and later Obama Food Czar, Michael Taylor) forced onto the market the controversial recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH). rBGH was marketed to dairy farmers who injected the hormone into dairy cows to force them to produce more milk. It was brought to market, despite mounting evidence of increased antibiotic resistance and cancer risks, and over the objections of the General Accounting Office (Congress’ watchdog agency), and the Consumers Union, the Cancer Prevention Coalition and the Pure Food Campaign. Although approved for sale in the U.S., rBGH was subsequently banned in Europe, Canada, and most industrialized nations.

In allowing supposedly safe “maximum residue limits” and “average daily intake” (ADI) levels of toxic poisons like Roundup in our food and water, government regulators are recklessly ignoring the fact that most (non-organic) foods today, GMO and non-GMO alike, are being sprayed with Roundup, either as an herbicide or a pre-harvest desiccant. The nearly omnipresent accumulation of these Roundup residues in produce, processed foods, meat and animal products (unless they are organic) is extremely hazardous, causing birth defects, gene mutations, chromosomal aberrations and cancer. They destroy our essential gastrointestinal biome (gut) health by killing off the beneficial microorganisms and bacteria in our stomach and promoting the “bad” microorganisms that can lead to gastrointestinal disorders, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression, autism, infertility, and Alzheimers. (“The Myths of Safe Pesticides,” pp.69-70).

Moreover Monsanto and the pesticide industry conveniently hide the fact that hormone receptors in human body cells often “misidentify” tiny parts-per-billion, or even parts-per-trillion, of pesticides as if they are human hormones, converting these pesticide residues into potent and deadly hormone disruptors. In other words, there really is no “safe limit” for Roundup or other pesticide residues in human food, animal feed, municipal drinking water or breast milk.

An increasing number of scientists and consumer advocates warn that current gene-splicing techniques are crude, inexact and unpredictable, and that the toxic chemicals, especially Monsanto’s Roundup, sprayed on these genetically engineered seeds and plants are incredibly dangerous. In October 2013, more than 200 scientists, physicians, academics and experts from disciplines relevant to the scientific, legal, social and safety assessment GMOs issued a statement which said, “we strongly reject claims by GM seed developers and some scientists, commentators, and journalists that there is a ‘scientific consensus’ on GMO safety and that the debate on this topic is ‘over.'”

It is now blatantly obvious that GMOs are nothing more than patented Pesticide Delivery Systems (PDS) designed to increase sales of poisonous agrochemicals such as Roundup, glufosinate, Bt, 2,4 D and neonicotinoids. To claim that GMOs are perfectly safe is equivalent to saying that pesticides, herbicides and fungicides—systemically laced at ever-higher levels into GMO-tainted human food and animal feed—are perfectly safe. And to make matters worse, hundreds of millions of pounds of Monsanto’s Roundup, the most widely used herbicide in the world, are now routinely sprayed on 160 different crops, just before harvest, including wheat, potatoes, oats, canola, flax, peas and dried beans. In other words, just about every non-organic item in your supermarket, or every item on your restaurant menu (bread, potatoes, meat, milk,) is now tainted with Roundup.

A 12-point agenda for driving GMOs off the market

The anti-GMO and organic Movement has come a long way in the past two decades. But given the dangers posed by GMOs and Roundup, it’s time to move aggressively forward. Here are a dozen crucial steps we need to take in 2015 to drive GMOs and Roundup off the market.

1.    Stop Congress from passing the Pompeo bill (HR #4432) in 2015, which would take away states rights to pass mandatory GMO food labeling bills, and make it legal for unscrupulous food and beverage companies to continue mislabeling  GMO-tainted foods as “natural” or “all natural.”

2.    Stop Congress from “fast-tracking” and passing secretly negotiated “Free Trade” agreements (the TPP-Trans-Pacific Partnership, and TTIP-Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership) that would weaken consumer and states rights to label and safety test GMO and factory-farmed foods.

3.    Pass more state laws requiring mandatory labels on GMOs.

4.    Pass more bans on GMOs, neonicotinoids and pesticides at the township, city, and county levels.

5.    Support Vermont, Maui (Hawaii), Jackson and Josephine counties (Oregon) in their federal and state legal battles to uphold their laws requiring labels and/or bans on GMOs.

6.    Educate the public on the dangers and cruelty of GMO-fed, factory-farmed meat, dairy and egg products, and organize a “Great Boycott” of all factory-farmed foods.

7.    Support mandatory state legislation to label dairy products and chain restaurant food coming from factory farms or CAFOs (Confined Animal Feeding Operations).

8.    Pressure retail natural food stores and coops to follow the lead of Whole Foods Market and the Natural Grocer to label and/or ban all GMO-derived foods, including meat and animal products and deli foods, from their stores.

9.    Pressure restaurants to follow the lead of organic/grass fed restaurants and ban, or at least label, all GMO ingredients.

10.    Support consumer efforts to test for Roundup/glyphosate contamination in drinking water, human urine, breast milk, and in non-GMO food products such as wheat, potatoes, oats, peas, lentils and dry beans that are currently sprayed with Roundup before harvest.

11.    Educate the public on the positive health, environmental, ethical and climate-friendly (greenhouse gas sequestering) attributes of organic, grass-fed, and pasture-raised food and farming.

12.    Boycott the “Traitor Brand” products of the Grocery Manufacturers Association, International Dairy Foods Association, and the Snack Food Association.

Sick of being sick? Fight GMO’S!

To all PAN members

“X” here. I took this valuable information from one Doug Hill who represents an independent research group called the Laissez Faire Club. I edited this article for content, as it is an ad for their monthly publication, Laissez Faire Letter. Much of the enlarged font is my emphasis, though some is as contained in their ad.

They are fighting Obama, the FDA, the Federal Reserve… and all their accomplices in Washington who continue to obfuscate the evidence and support Monsanto’s GMO program.

This insidious agribusiness must be stopped.

It corroborates much of the info I obtain from a consumer group Organic Consumers Association, – AKA Organic Bytes-  whose reports I’ve blogged on PWE.

Here is an excerpt from a post I made on Dec 31st 2013:

2014 is shaping up to be a decisive year for the future of food and farming.  Grassroots activists are gearing up for new legislative battles, including state GMO labeling laws and county bans on growing genetically engineered crops. Meanwhile the multinational food corporations last month raised the stakes in the ongoing David vs. Goliath battle by petitioning the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to allow companies to continue to label or market products that contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs) as “natural.” And all signs point to efforts by industry and the FDA to float either voluntary, or watered-down mandatory GMO labeling laws that would take away states’ rights to impose strict GMO labeling laws, and also exempt a large percentage of GMO ingredients from labeling.  [For related articles and more information, please visit OCA’s Genetic Engineering page, and our Millions Against Monsanto page. ]

Below is Doug Hill‘s Whistleblowing article:

You Can Either Take Action or Continue to Trust Big Seed Companies and the FDA.

Did you know that Monsanto has a long history of deceiving the public just to make money?

This is the same company that said its chemical PCB was safe.

You may have heard about the scandal in Anniston, Alabama. For nearly 40 years, Monsanto routinely dumped a toxic chemical called PCB into the town’s landfill and creek.

Those who lived closest to the Monsanto plant got cancer and liver problems.

While the company told the public PCB was safe, internal memos showed the company knew it was highly toxic.

Thousands of pages of company documents – many containing warnings such as “CONFIDENTIAL: Read and Destroy” — show that for decades, the company concealed what it did and what it knew.

In 1975, for example, a company study found that PCBs caused tumors in rats. They ordered its conclusion changed from “slightly tumorigenic” to “doesn’t appear to be cause cancer.”

In one of the internal memos, one of the managers justified the company’s despicable actions by saying “we can’t afford to lose one dollar of business.”

No wonder Monsanto is known as “the most evil corporation in the world.” They have proved time and time again that no price is too high to pay when it comes to achieving their profit goals… even when the price is that of human lives.

And that’s not the only example.

The company has also sold other highly toxic products, such as Agent Orange, DDT, and Aspartame. And the company said they were all safe for humans.

But today, Agent Orange and DDT are outlawed due to the massive damage they cause to human life. Agent Orange, for example, has killed and maimed an estimated 400,000 people and lead to 500,000 birth defects.

And scientific research has linked Aspartame to birth defects, cancer, diabetes, emotional disorders and seizures.

Today, Monsanto is the leader in genetically modified seeds. And they say GM food is safe.

Given their track record, I wouldn’t trust them if I were you.

Why gamble with your and your family’s health when there are so many other alternatives to the potentially toxic goods of the big agricultural firms?

And remember… if you trust the FDA, you’re essentially putting your trust in these companies.

The food we’re eating may be causing us and our loved ones to die early deaths, despite having some of the world’s best health care.

Despite all the evidence and the growing concerns of genetically engineered crops, government officials continue to rubber stamp their approval.

In other words, you shouldn’t expect anyone in the government to ensure the safety of your food…

Because our food supply is under control of cronies… giant food corporations that dominate food and farm policy at the White House, USDA, FDA, and EPA.

And all they care about is making money. They don’t give a damn about your health.

We Don’t Even Have the Right to
Know What’s In Our Food

For years, polls have shown that about 93% of Americans support the labeling of foods that contain genetically modified organisms.

But the biotech industry, with the help of the FDA, has decided that we don’t need to know when there are potentially harmful ingredients in our food. So, GM foods are not required to carry identifying labels.

We are being denied the fundamental right to know what’s in our food – a right that more than 50 other nations, including China and Russia, offer their citizens.

It’s estimated that 70% of processed foods contains genetically modified organisms. But because of the lack of labels, Americans have no clue.

By keeping us completely in the dark, these GMO companies are essentially controlling our diet.

As a result, millions of American infants, children and adults are unknowingly consuming potentially dangerous food products each day.

Americans get sick more often than Europeans and people in other industrialized countries.

And since the mid-1990s, the number of Americans suffering from chronic diseases, such as heart disease, asthma, cancerand diabetes, has nearly doubled.

America’s infant mortality has increased and life span has plunged.

Why is this happening? What has changed over the last two decades that could possibly explain this huge downward spiral in the health of our nation?

Well, one thing definitely changed in the mid-1990s: the food we eat.

A little over twenty years ago, scientists started tinkering with our food supply, taking genes from one species and forcing it into the DNA of other species…

Creating new organisms that did not exist in nature… organisms that are now part of the majority of the food we eat.

I’m talking about crops that have been genetically engineered to either produce their own pesticides or withstand mega doses of herbicides.

They came with the promise they would increase crop yields and profits. So, many in the farm community welcomed this innovation.

As a result, starting in 1996, these genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, spread rapidly through U.S. fields.

Description

This was also a big bonanza for the biotech firms that developed these crops.

You see, genetically engineered seeds are patentable. So the companies that develop these seeds can have total control of the market. This represents billions in sales.

For example, take a look at a company named Monsanto. With a 90% market share, it dominates the GMO industry.

And farmers who purchase Monsanto’s patented GMO seeds have to sign a contract. This agreement forbids farmers from keeping any new seed produced by the crop for the following year, or even saving leftover seeds.

In other words, farmers must agree to use the seeds for one-time only. This basically ensures a perpetual stream of cash flow for the company because farmers will have to buy new seeds every year.

It was a win-win situation for the farmers and biotech firms. The farmers get bigger crops that can grow in any conditions. The biotech firms make money selling their seeds.

And boy, did it produce profits…

Take a look at this chart of Monsanto’s share price over the past 15 years…

Description

A lot of people got very rich, and very powerful selling these genetically modified crops. There’s a lot of money at stake here.

According to new scientific evidence, these genetically modified crops may be extremely dangerous to our families.

And just like people used to smoke cigarettes because they had no idea it could kill them, most Americans today are eating this food because they are unaware of the risks.

They do it because government agencies, such as the Food and Drug Administration (or FDA), have said these genetically modified crops are safe.

But can we trust them?

The FDA has actually never conducted any studies on humans to prove this food is safe.

In other words, this government agency has intentionally unleashed a host of potentially harmful foods onto American dinner tables.

I know this may be hard to believe…

But 44,000 pages of internal memos from the FDA show its own scientists agreed that GMOs could create unpredictable, unsafe, and hard-to-detect allergens, toxins, diseases, and nutritional problems.

The Secret Killer in Your Food

DescriptionDescriptionDescriptionDescription

About 80% of your immune system resides in your gut.

The gut is the main interface between our body and any kind of food.

So, if for any reason, your body sees food as an alien object, something that cannot be found in nature…

Your immune system might attack it, creating an inflammatory reaction. In other words, inflammation flares up whenever your body feels threatened.

Well, it turns out…. Since 1996, when GM foods were introduced into our diet, several digestive disorders related to gut inflammation have skyrocketed.  [ABOVE  GRAPHS]

Is this just a coincidence? Well, think about this for a moment…

Scientists have changed the gene sequence of some of the food we eat, making it a foreign object… So it shouldn’t be a surprise that our immune system might be reacting to this new kind of food, causing inflammation.

And that’s a big deal because the health damages can go well beyond diseases related to digestion.

Inflammation has been linked to a number of health problems.

In fact, recent medical research shows that hidden inflammation, the kind that originates in your gut, is at the root of ALL chronic illness we experience – conditions like heart disease, obesity, diabetes, dementia, depression, cancer, and even autism.

Maybe that explains why autism has increased 600% since GM foods came on the market… or why the number of Americans with diabetes has nearly tripled in the past two decades…

That’s why TIME magazine has called inflammation “the secret killer”. According to the magazine,

“It destabilizes cholesterol deposits in the coronary arteries, leading to heart attacks and potentially even strokes.”

It chews up nerve cells in the brains of Alzheimer’s victims. It may even foster the proliferation of abnormal cells and facilitate their transformation into cancer.”

“In other words, chronic inflammation may be the engine that drives many of the most feared illnesses of middle and old age.

Inflammation happens for a reason… it happens when a bacterium or toxin or some other irritant triggers an immune response.

Several studies have shown that genetically modified food is triggering that response.

Dr. P. M. Bhargava, one of the world’s top biologists, has reviewed 600 scientific journals. He concluded that GM foods in the US are largely responsible for the increase in many serious diseases.

Dr. Robin Bernhoft, a Harvard-trained doctor and director of the Bernhoft Center for Advanced Medicine in Ojai, California, has found that patient health improves when GM foods are removed from their diet.

Dr. Miguel Gonzalez, a physician in California, believes that “genetically modified foods are causing inflammation of the bowel.”

Research from the American Academy of Environmental Medicine states that

“several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food consumption including infertility, immune dysfunction, accelerated aging, dysfunction of cholesterol synthesis, insulin regulation, and protein formation, and changes in the liver, kidney, spleen
and gastrointestinal system.”

Many scientists believe that GM food is what’s triggering inflammation.

And if you don’t address that properly, you may end up with coronary artery disease, arthritis, cancer and other chronic illnesses.

We’ve All Become Unwitting Guinea Pigs In
An Experiment of Massive Proportions

Take soybeans, for example.

Scientists took genes from bacteria and inserted into the DNA of soy, creating a new kind of crop that can withstand mega doses of an herbicide called Roundup.

They call it Roundup-ready soy… and it accounts for 94% of soybeans in the U.S.

So, farmers can spray these crops as often as they like. The herbicide will kill all weeds, but leave the soy plants intact.

This is great because the farmers who buy Roundup-ready soy also have to buy Roundup, which is the company’s best-selling herbicide.

As you can probably imagine, this scheme is very lucrative for biotech companies.

The only problem is that new studies show that GM soy can be dangerous to your health.

You might say “but I don’t eat a lot of soy products, so what’s the big deal?”

Well, did you know soy is in a thousand places we might never expect it, usually in the form of “vegetable oil”? You’ll find it in salad dressings, soups, and imitation meat products.

In fact, if you or anyone in your family eats any kind of processed food, such as cereals, cookies, cakes, chips, crackers, muffins, mac n’ cheese, chicken nuggets, it’s very likely you’re eating genetically modified soy.

And numerous studies with animals have showed that…

It Can Cause Damage in the Liver,
Lung, and Pancreas

UK scientists at the York Nutritional Laboratory have linked GM soy to digestion problems, headache, lethargy, acne, and eczema. And they sounded the alarm saying that their findings “provide real evidence that GM food could have a tangible, harmful impact on the human body.”

And a human study from the U.S. National Academy of Sciences said that parts of the altered gene in GM soy went on to live in our gut. The study concluded this has the potential to change our immune system in unpredictable ways.

Dr. John Boyles, an allergy specialist from Ohio, says “GM soy is so dangerous that I tell people never to eat it.”

Even babies are at risk…

Because soy is used in 25% of all baby formulas in the US. Dr. Daniel Sheehan, a toxicologist formerly with the FDA, has warned that infants who drink this formula are part of a “large, uncontrolled and basically unmonitored human infant experiment.”

One easy step you can take is to avoid processed or packaged foods.

You see, aside from soybeans, in the U.S., 90% of sugar beets and 88% of corn are also genetically modified.

These items are basic components of pretty much everything you can find in a grocery store. So, every time you or your family eat processed or packaged food, there’s a good chance you’re taking a bite of a GM ingredient.

You Could Be Eating a
Dangerous Toxin Every Day

Just like soy, corn also seems to be everywhere. High-fructose corn syrup lurks in foods that don’t seem “corny” to us: candy, breads, ketchup, granola bars, and even English muffins.

While soy has been genetically modified to withstand herbicides, corn has been genetically modified to produce its own insecticide.

Scientists took genes from a bacterium that produces an insecticide and inserted it into corn. With that new genetic material, the corn can produce its own bacterial toxins, called Bt protein.

It’s a toxin that’s design to break open the stomach of insects that try to eat the corn. So, the corn’s cells produce a toxic protein that kills bugs.

The crop itself is the pesticide.

When I discovered this information, the first thing that came to my mind was…

“Wait a second… if this toxin destroys the insect’s gut, could it do the same to me and my family?”

According to the FDA, this corn is safe. They say Bt protein is toxic only to insects. But there’s new evidence that shows Bt protein could damage humans as well.

A recent study published in the International Journal of Biological Sciences concluded that GM corn damages the liver and kidneys.

The Journal of Hematology Diseases published research showing that it destroys red blood cells, disrupt blood clotting and cause organ degeneration and tissue damage in mice.

Joe Cummins, Professor Emeritus of Genetics at the University of Western Ontario, has also concluded that the Bt toxin could damage the small intestine.

And UK’s Institute of Science in Society has said that Bt “kills human kidney cells” and that its approval was based on “inadequate safety assessments.”

No wonder genetically modified corn is already outlawed in Hungary, Austria, Germany, Greece, and Luxembourg.

But Americans are unknowingly consuming this Bt toxin every single time they eat something that has GM corn in it.

Description

Just look at these rats… they were fed genetically modified corn… the same corn you buy from the grocery store… and feed your family.

In this particular study, GM corn caused rats to develop horrifying tumors, widespread organ damage, and premature death.

Rats that ate GM corn saw four times the number of deaths and an 80% increase in cancer compared to those that ate conventional corn.

Despite all this shocking evidence, agricultural companies and the FDA continue to claim that GM corn is safe because, according to them, our body naturally degrades the Bt toxin.

If that’s true, then how can you explain the fact that toxic pesticides from GM food crops have been found in unborn babies?

In a study that analyzed dozens of samples from women, scientists found traces of the toxin in 93% of the pregnant mothers and in 80% of the umbilical cords.

The research suggested the chemicals were entering the body through eating meat, milk and eggs from farm livestock that were fed GM corn.

And UK’s The Telegraph reported that the study’s conclusion “appears to contradict the food industry’s long-standing claim that any potentially harmful chemicals added to crops would pass safely through the body.”

The strong link between government and big corporations that produce GM food:

Big corporations, lobbyists and politicians will do anything to keep you in the dark. Why? Because there’s big money involved. That’s the cold truth of our food supply.

If word gets out that genetically modified foods are potentially dangerous, the food companies’ billions of dollars in profits will be in SERIOUS jeopardy.

The genetically modified crop market is huge. In the last decade alone, Monsanto, which controls 90% of the market, has made more than $116 billion in sales.

And they use a lot of that money to make sure nobody will interfere with their business.

In recent years they have spent over $52 million in lobbying to make sure they get the most favorable legislation possible.

And that has paid off… as the New York Times said, “the White House worked behind the scenes to help Monsanto get the regulations that it wanted.”

The company is also a very prolific user of Washington DC’s “revolving door.”

The FDA, for example, welcomes past and future executives from the food industry.

In other words, giant corporations literally send employees to go work for the FDA and other regulatory agencies, where they can write food policies that will favor the companies.

To this date, the current Deputy Commissioner for Policy at the FDA is a former Monsanto employee.

As a key regulator in charge of food safety, he has the ability to control what does and doesn’t show up on your family’s table.

Don’t you think that having someone from one of these corporations in charge of food policies represents a huge conflict of interest?

Thanks to these intimate links with government agencies, food corporations could be…

Using You and Your Family as Lab Rats

In 1992, when the FDA approved GMOs, the agency claimed there was an overall consensus among scientists that GM food was safe.

But now we know that’s a big lie.

In 1998 a lawsuit forced 44,000 pages of internal files from the FDA into the public domain.

These memos reveal that the consensus was the exact opposite. Scientists urged the FDA to do long-term safety studies to guard against possible allergies, toxins, new diseases, and nutritional problems.

For example, FDA scientists recommended testing every GM food “before it enters the marketplace” because of “the possibility of unexpected, accidental changes in genetically engineered plants.”

According to one of the memos, Dr. Linda Kahl, an FDA compliance officer, warned the agency that “the processes of genetic engineering lead…to different risks.”

And Dr. Jim Maryanski, the FDA Biotechnology Coordinator at the time, admitted that there was no consensus about the safety of genetically engineered foods in the scientific community.

But bureaucrats at the FDA ignored the scientists’ warnings and allowed GM food crops onto the market.

Dr. Maryanski also admitted that the approval of GMOs was based on politics, not science. He said that “the determination whether a new protein is safe can be made by the company.”

In other words, the FDA- the agency so many naïve Americans think is here to protect us- allowed food companies to determine the safety of GM food.

But one of Monsanto’s own executives said at the time that “Monsanto should NOT have to vouch the safety of biotech food. Our interest is in selling as much of it as possible.

Dr. Philip Regal, a professor at the University of Minnesota and an internationally recognized plant expert once stated: “Over the last fifteen years, I and other scientists have put the FDA on notice about the potential dangers of genetically engineered foods.”

According to Andrew Kimbrell, who at the time was Executive Director of the International Center for Technology Assessment, “by failing to require testing and labeling of genetically engineered foods, the FDA has made consumers unknowing guinea pigs for potentially harmful food substances.”

And a report by eight renowned international experts concluded that “agricultural GM companies and evaluation committees systematically overlook the side effects of GMOs and pesticides.”

The study also says they greatly underestimate “the initial signs of diseases like cancer and diseases of the hormonal, immune, nervous and reproductive systems, among others.”

And it gets worse… the food industry’s control goes well beyond the government.

Keeping the American Public in the Dark

Big food companies provide funding to most food research, conferences, and fellowships.

This private funding certainly seems to affect the way professors and scientists think, act, and publish.

Researchers have a huge incentive to write only good things about GM crops, otherwise they may lose funding… or even worse, their jobs.

A study from Food and Water Watch concluded that this corporate funding “taints the independence and objectivity of agricultural research.”

These companies have also been systematically blocking researchers from using its patented gene modified seeds.

According to Doug Sherman of the Union of Concerned Scientists, “multibillion-dollar agricultural corporations, including Monsanto and Syngenta, have often refused to provide independent scientists with seeds, or they’ve set restrictive conditions that severely limit research options.”

26 researchers from different universities even wrote a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency protesting restricted access to seeds. The letter states that “no truly independent research can be legally conducted on many critical questions involving these crops. The biotech industry is completely driving the bus.”

The magazine Scientific American has also reported that “only studies that the seed companies have approved ever see the light of a peer-reviewed journal. In a number of cases, experiments that had the implicit go-ahead from the seed company were later blocked from publication because the results were not good.”

In order words, these companies basically choose who gets to do research and what topics are studied and published.

They also try to destroy the reputation and careers of any scientists who stand in their way.

Perhaps, biologist Arpad Pusztai is the best example. He had more than 300 articles and 12 books to his credit and was the world’s top expert in his field.

In the 1990s, he conducted a study that showed that rats that ate GM potatoes developed potentially pre-cancerous cell growth, smaller brains and testicles, partially atrophied livers, and damaged immune systems.

After his shocking discovery, he decided to reveal his findings on national TV.

Two days later he was fired and silenced with threats of a lawsuit. His team was dismantled. And the government, with the help of big corporations, launched a smear campaign to destroy his reputation.

Many other scientists have been threatened and fired from their jobs as well.

That’s why University of California at Berkeley professor Ignacio Chapela says that “it’s very hard for us to publish in this field. People are scared.”

That’s a big reason why most Americans have no idea how dangerous GM foods are.

Corn used to be one of my favorite foods. Soybeans used to be a healthy food, as was soybean oil.  I stopped eating corn years ago when I found out about Monsanto, and unfortunately, you will find it – in the form of “high fructose corn syrup”- in many packaged / processed foods, even bread. BE A LABEL READER, for you and your loved ones health. Two thirds of what is now on the grocers shelves is on my OFF list  !!

Please take this seriously; take care, “X”

Motivated by a PAN member’s post  – I’m just flat out P.O.  I don’t keep live links to PAN; this is as posted on PAN discussions,  her actual post to start.

For the past almost six (6) years the vast majority of Americans have not just simply been asleep at the wheel.  They have been downright comatose.  The ten or twenty percent of the population that is AWAKE and COGNIZANT OF WHAT IS HAPPENING have speculated long and hard about what it would take to wake the other eighty to ninety percent.

Would a dramatic upsurge in unemployment wake them up?  Not yet, it hasn’t

Would the destruction of our Blue Ribbon Healthcare system and conversion to a subpar socialist system do it:  NO

How about the Benghazi debacle?   NOPE

Using the IRS as a weapon against American Taxpayers?  Not so anybody would notice.

Even an Invasion of OUR Southern Border by enemies and illegals from all sorts of organizations hasn’t done it.

Fast and Furious evoked only laughs.

So would another 9/11 event wake them from their coma?        I doubt it

How about an ISIS attack similar to what is happening in other countries?  Would it result in an uprising?

Or, is it more likely that millions would calmly say, ‘THANK GOD IT ISN’T IN MY BACKYARD’  AND THEY’D GO RIGHT BACK TO SLEEP.  Maybe it is all the chemicals in the water?

Marlene Hessler’s recent post is point-blank truth:

AN ISIS ATTACK ON AMERICANS WITHIN OUR BORDERS

Posted by Marlene Hessler on August 25, 2014

Hats off for this hard hitting commentary. Unfortunately, (and this really chaps my hide) it seems that Americans aren’t merely asleep at the wheel, but outright COMATOSE!

If the truth hit them over the head, they’d still be in a state of denial. One of the vital issues that have largely been ignored, is the problem of GMO’S.

The Hydra, Monsanto, (all you homeowners out there, they are the makers of Roundup herbicide) in just fifteen or so years, has trampled over what was the last vestiges of true agriculture. We face one of the greatest threats from our own food supply. GMO’s are a category on my other blog; and have gotten few responses.

Remember long ago when the expression “You are what you eat” became commonplace?  How about a new one:  “When the bees go, we go!”

These two items from Organic Bytes:

Tick, Tock

The clock is ticking on our last chance to stop a ticking time bomb.

On August 6 (2014), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), over the objections of 50 members of Congress, and more than 500,000 citizens, scientists, farmers and health professionals, moved one step closer to approving Dow’s new Enlist “Agent Orange” brand soy and corn crops.

The crops are engineered to withstand massive doses of Enlist Duo herbicide, concocted from a combination of 2,4-D (used to make Agent Orange) and glyphosate, the key ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup.

The USDA has admitted that approval of Dow’s new crops will cause the use of 2,4-D to skyrocket from 26 million pounds to 176 million pounds. Scientists predict worse.

Dow’s 2,4-D is already the seventh largest source of dioxins in the U.S. It’s been linked to a host of ills, including birth defects, infertility, allergies, Parkinson’s disease, endocrine disruption and cancer.

It’s unconscionable that the USDA would approve these crops. Yet the agency is less than 18 days away from doing just that. Unless we stop it.

Deadline September 8: Tell the USDA to reject Dow’s ‘Agent Orange’ crops!

Will your Congress Member Sign?

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lists nearly 40 pollinator species as threatened or endangered.

Monarch butterflies aren’t faring much better. In California, the Monarch population has declined by 80 percent over 15 years, in part due to the extensive use of Monsanto’s Roundup.

Two Congressmen, Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) and Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) have written a letter to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Gina McCarthy, urging her to review and revise pesticide regulations protecting pollinators. In order to make the letter carry more weight, they’re asking their colleagues to sign on.

In their letter, Reps. Blumenauer and Conyers refer to recent studies revealing that “systemic pesticides—including neonicotinoids—are accumulating in soils and polluting waterways and natural vegetation across the world, leading to widespread impacts on wildlife inhabiting farmland and aquatic habitats.”

They also point out that much of this pesticide use is unnecessary and ineffective.

Please ask your Congress members to sign on to the Blumenauer-Conyers “Dear Colleague” letter. We’re hoping to get 50 Members to sign on, before the letter closes on September 8.

Organic Bytes – Monsanto’s Evil Twin

ESSAY OF THE WEEK

Monsanto’s Evil Twin

Before there was Monsanto with its GMOs (genetically modified organisms), there were junk food companies hard at work peddling their influence, and promoting their agendas, in Congress.

Now, the Grocery Manufacturer’s Association of America (GMA), which represents the world’s largest purveyors of junk food, is working in cahoots with Monsanto to protect their obscene profits by doing everything in their power to keep labels off of GMO-contaminated foods.

The GMA is pushing for  a watered-down, voluntary GMO labeling law, one that would allow GMO-contaminated foods to be labeled “natural.”  And it’s threatening to sue any state that passes a GMO labeling law. And it’s even going after the Washington State attorney general for the right to hide campaign contributions.

If Monsanto is the most evil corporation in the world, the GMA is surely the Biotech Bully’s evil twin.

USDA-Approved Agent Orange Ingredient: Coming to a Farm Near You

Posted By on Jan 6, 2014

 agent-orange-usda-approved

Ah, the sweet smell of Agent Orange in the morning.

Our benevolent agricultural guardians at the USDA have announced that they are allowing the introduction of new corn and soybean seeds that have been designed specifically to withstand a dousing with 2,4-D, a key ingredient in the infamously deadly Agent Orange.

Now we get to be the unwilling guinea pigs while USDA-approved test fields are planted.

It seems that our government did not learn its lesson from the millions of people gruesomely affected by the ingredients of Agent Orange the first time around.

Agent Orange, you may recall, was brought to wartime Vietnam by the evil masterminds at Dow and Monsanto. American forces sprayed it all over the countryside of Vietnam from 1961 to 1971.  Its purpose was to defoliate trees and shrubs that were providing cover to enemy forces, and to kill food crops that were providing sustenance.

Agent Orange

This caused damage to the ecosystem of Vietnam that is still present today. More than 5 million acres of forests were destroyed, and half a million acres of farmland were tainted. It will take centuries of nurturing for the land to recover.

The environment was not the only thing affected. Exposure to Agent Orange resulted in five horrible illness in those exposed: soft-tissue sarcoma, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia (including hairy-cell leukemia), Hodgkin’s disease, and chloracne. (source) What’s even worse is that the damage may not be limited to those directly exposed – it can affect offspring even up to 3rd and 4th generations.

Over a million US veterans were also exposed:

In 2010, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs provided $16.2 billion in compensation to 1,095,473 Vietnam-era veterans.[i] The agency does not relate these service-connected benefit figures directly to Agent Orange/dioxin exposure or to any other possible cause of illness, nor does it provide data on total compensation for the years since the war ended.

Thousands of U.S. veterans returning from Vietnam reported health problems almost immediately and rapidly associated them with Agent Orange/dioxin exposure. Controversy over these assertions began just as fast, and continues now.

Many questions remain:   Whether (and how to test whether) the illnesses of veterans and their offspring are related to Agent Orange and other herbicide exposure; Levels of dioxin present in the chemicals; The accuracy of data about veterans’ exposure; Levels of corporate, military and government awareness of dioxin’s presence; Fixing of responsibility for the contaminant’s presence and liability for its damages; Details of research protocols, accuracy of findings and reliability of interpretations; and Decisions on who should pay what to whom for which possible courses of remedial action.  This “blame game” has blocked action in both the U.S. and Vietnam, needlessly prolonging the suffering of millions of U.S. veterans and Vietnamese.  – (source)

agent-orange-287x300

And now, the USDA, in all of their infinite wisdom, intends to expose Americans to one of the deadly ingredients via our food supply.

Corn and soybeans are present in some form in up to 90% of the processed foods available today. So not only will we be exposed to the effects environmentally, anyone who eats processed food will be directly consuming it. Mmmm…Corn with Agent Orange Sauce…Yummy.

Some scientist argue that 2,4-D is not responsible for the horrible human toll extracted by Agent Orange, while others claim the weed-killer is deadly.

According to the Associated Press, scientists don’t believe 2,4-D to be responsible for health complications caused by Agent Orange, and have instead pinpointed the ingredient 2,4,5-T – banned by the EPA in 1985 – as the culprit. Previous findings by the EPA have also declared the weed killer safe to use, but other groups aren’t as confident.

As RT reported in the past, the Natural Resources Defense Council has linked 2,4-D to cases of cancer, genetic mutations and more. In addition the impact on humans, the Save Our Crops Coalition believes it will be extremely difficult to contain the application of the herbicide to a particular area.

“These herbicides have been known to drift and volatilize to cause damage to plants over ten miles away from the point of application,” the coalition claimed. (source)

Proven in the island petri dish of Molokai, the danger of GMO crops is not limited to the consumption of those foods. The farming methods themselves cause an epidemic of deadly health problems to those near the fields, including cancer, respiratory illness, and horrible skin disorders.

The EPA review of these experimental new seeds will occur over the next few months, and if approved (and we all know it will be since the EPA is as much of a sell-out as the USDA) farmers across the country will then be able to plant the new seeds douse the fields with 2,4-D throughout the growing season.

When the very air you depend on to survive is poisoned, what can you do? How can you prep for this?

Agent Orange.  It’s coming to a farm near you.

Update:  Since it isn’t actually Agent Orange that is being used, but an ingredient found in the chemical, the title has been updated to reflect what was communicated in the article.

GMO and ‘Natural’ Food Fight: Treacherous Terrain

  •           By Ronnie Cummins                        Organic Consumers Association, December 31, 2013

For related articles and more information, please visit OCA’s Genetic Engineering page, and our Millions Against Monsanto page.

For more than two decades, Monsanto and Big Food have poisoned and profited with impunity, thanks to the FDA’s reckless 1992 dictate that pesticide-drenched (Roundup-resistant) or insecticide-impregnated (Bt-spliced) crops and foods are “safe and substantially equivalent” to non-GE foods. Now, the Biotech Bullies and Junk Food Giants are under siege by a well-informed and passionate grassroots food movement that is determined to drastically reduce or eliminate the market share of genetically engineered and chemically-intensive foods and crops.

Since natural health and food activists discovered the “Achilles Heel” of the GMA and processed junk food industries—mandatory labeling—there has been no stopping this movement. Over the past several years, this movement has painstakingly built a broad national coalition to demand laws requiring mandatory labeling of foods containing genetically engineered ingredients, the same types of laws that have been passed in the European Union and scores of other nations. Food activists, bolstered by a growing number of successful class action lawsuits, are also demanding that food manufacturers and retailers put an end to the routine industry practice of fraudulently labeling or marketing products contaminated with GMOs and other chemicals as “natural” or “all natural.”

In the past two years, citizen activists in 30 states have pressured legislators to pass mandatory GMO labeling laws, with partial success in three states: Vermont, Connecticut and Maine. Anti-GMO campaigners boldly challenged the mega-billion-dollar biotech and Big Food establishment in 2012 in California (Proposition 37) and 2013 in Washington State (I-522) by launching state GMO labeling initiatives. Pro-organic and natural health activists raised a multi-million dollar war chest and mobilized millions of voters in two hard-fought and highly publicized campaigns that industry barely won (51%-49%).  Both initiatives garnered national attention. Combined, they forced the biotech and food elite to spend $70 million ($12 million of which was illegally laundered in Washington state through their front group, the Grocery Manufacturers Association) and wage a blatantly dishonest campaign that ultimately divided the industry and damaged the reputations and sales of a number of national brands, including Coca-Cola (Honest Tea and Odwalla); Pepsico (Naked Juice); General Mills (Cascadian Farm and Muir Glen); Unilever (Ben & Jerry’s); Dean Foods (Horizon, Silk, White Wave); Heinz (Heinz Organic), Nestle’s, and Kellogg’s (Kashi, Morningstar Farms, Gardenburger).

Meanwhile, inspired in part by this anti-GMO grassroots upsurge, over 100 class action lawsuits have been filed across the U.S., charging major food corporations with labeling fraud for labeling or marketing GMO-tainted or chemically processed foods and cooking oils as “natural” or “all natural.”  Rather than admit that much of their product lines are junk foods filled with synthetic chemicals and GMOs, and that nearly the entire $70-billion “natural” products industry is based on fraud and deception (i.e. misleading health minded consumers into believing that unregulated, non-certified “natural” products are “nearly organic,”), large companies such as Pepsi, General Mills, Kellogg’s and Con-Agra, and specialty brands such as Chabani and Barbara’s will likely pay out millions of dollars in out-of-court settlements this year while quietly removing “natural” and “all natural” labels from their non-organic products.

GMO labeling laws are the cornerstone of the anti-GMO movement. But consumers are also expanding the fight by demanding outright bans on the growing of GMO crops. A number of counties in California, Washington and Hawaii have already passed bans, while a half dozen others, including counties in Oregon and California, will vote to create GMO-free zones in 2014.

Beyond “Exemptions:” Comprehensive Labeling

In a bizarre but effective propaganda move, polls reveal that Monsanto and the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) bamboozled millions of voters into voting “no” on mandatory GMO food labeling initiatives in California and Washington by pretending to take the side of consumers. How? By pointing out that these ballot initiatives failed to require GMO labels on restaurant, cafeteria and take-out food, and on meat and animal products. During the California and Washington campaigns, industry hammered home its message that the proposed initiatives were “incomplete,” “confusing,” “expensive” and riddled with “loopholes” that somehow benefitted nefarious “special interests.” In fact, consumers would have preferred a more comprehensive law, with no exemptions. But state laws mandate single-subject or limited provision language, and federal law preempts mandatory state labels on meat packages (though not on grocery store shelves, or on meat and dairy cases).

In the wake of Monsanto and the GMA successfully sowing confusion over GMO labeling “exemptions,” a growing number of activists have decided to call industry’s bluff by upping the ante. Future plans include pushing not only for GMO food labeling laws, but for all-inclusive food labeling legislation that will require restaurants, schools and grocery stores to label not just foods that contain GMO ingredients, but also foods from factory farms where animals are fed GMO-contaminated feed.

As Alexis Baden-Meyer, Political Director of the Organic Consumers Association puts it:

“Tens of millions of Americans want to know if the food they buy contains genetically engineered ingredients. They want to know whether the meat, fish and animal products they consume come from animals reared on factory farms or CAFO’s (Confined Animal Feeding Operations), where the animals are inhumanely confined, routinely fed genetically engineered grain, injected with synthetic hormones, engorged with growth promoters and dosed with antibiotics. Concerned consumers want and need this information whether they are shopping in a grocery store, sitting down in a restaurant or worrying about what their kids are eating in the school cafeteria. After we win the upcoming strategic battles over GMO food labeling in Vermont and Oregon, organic consumers and our allies will push for comprehensive factory farm labels as well.”

Industry’s Next Move: Co-Opting the Right-to-Know Movement

Industry sees the writing on the wall. As the head of the GMA admitted last year “we can’t keep fighting these labeling battles in every state.” Monsanto, Bayer and their allies such as General Mills, Coca-Cola and Pepsi know that in 2014, several states including Vermont and Oregon will likely pass mandatory GMO food labeling laws, while a flood of successful class action lawsuits will highlight the fact that major brands are fraudulently labeling their GMO and chemically-tainted junk foods and beverages as “natural” or all natural.

Once a greater degree of labeling transparency is required by law, even if in just a handful of states, leading food manufacturers will find themselves in a terrible bind. Will Kellogg’s or Coke admit that their products contain GMOs in Vermont or Oregon, while refusing to divulge this fact in the other 48 states, Canada and Mexico? Or will they be forced to do what they’ve already done in the EU, take these GMOs out of their products? Similarly if they can’t label their junk foods as “natural” or “all natural,” how will they successfully compete in the marketplace?

Backed into a corner by the anti-GMO movement, industry has come out fighting. The GMA has called on the Obama Administration and the FDA to bail out Big Food. If grassroots-powered state laws and class action judges will no longer permit the biotech and food industry to secretly tamper with non-organic food and then fraudulently label these products as “natural,” then industry wants the federal government to take away states’ power to require GMO labeling, and at the same time, take away the judiciary’s power to rule on fraudulently labeled “natural” products.

Leaked documents obtained by the  New York Times reveal that the GMA is lobbying the FDA to allow the use of “natural” on food labels even if the products contain GMOs. As Times writer Stephanie Strom reported on Dec. 19:

“Use of the term “natural” is now generating battles similar to previous fights over terms like organic, amid initiatives in several states that seek to label foods in a more transparent way. Last summer, Connecticut passed legislation on labeling that would make it illegal to use the word “natural” on the packaging of any food product containing biotech ingredients, and the governor signed it on Dec. 11.”

At the same time former USDA officials Dan Glickman and Kathleen Merrigan are floating the idea that certain members of the organic elite might be persuaded to back off on the demand for strict GMO labeling if certified organic products are allowed to state on their labels that they are “GMO-free.” As Glickman and Merrigan told the  LA Times:

“Mandatory GMO labeling of all food will continue to arouse passions on both sides of the issue. Though it may not satisfy all GMO-labeling advocates nor be welcomed by all leaders in the biotechnology industry, allowing a GMO-free organic label provides more choice in the marketplace and responds to the demands of millions of American consumers in a practical and common sense way.”

Meanwhile informed sources in the organic industry are warning that the FDA might be preparing to propose a watered-down federal GMO labeling law designed to co-opt the organic and anti-GMO Movement and take away states’ rights to pass stricter labeling laws covering all genetically engineered ingredients basically nullifying laws now under consideration in Vermont, Oregon and several dozen other states.

This strategy would involve the FDA allowing foods made from highly processed GE ingredients, such as cooking oils, high fructose corn syrup and sugar beets, that contain no easily detectable GE proteins down to a specified level to be labeled “natural”; and certified organic foods to be labeled as “GMO-free.” Under this strategy, labels would be required on only those foods that contain readily detectable GMO proteins, as determined by standardized tests. In other words a large percentage of GMO-tainted foods would still not have to be labeled.

So as we near victory on the GMO labeling front in Vermont and Oregon, and in class-action lawsuits this year, we must beware FDA treachery and the willingness of some in the organic and so-called “natural” industry to sell us out. If the FDA proposes a watered-down federal GMO labeling bill, or a rubber-stamp for the fraudulent industry practice of labeling GMO-tainted foods as “natural” or “all natural,” we must raise holy hell, and mobilize as never before.

Either way 2014 is shaping up to be a make or break year for citizen activism on the food and farming front, part of a larger battle that will determine whether we, the grassroots majority, take back our democracy, or surrender to the corporatocracy and their indentured media, scientists and politicians.

EPA Approves ‘Agent Orange’ Pesticide

Posted by: Published November 21, 2013, filed under ENVIRONMENT

agent_orange_plaques-r31bb94fbaee04c60807972487083454f_ar56b_8byvr_512[1]TLB Note: This story is a little over a year old, but how much have we heard about this? Are we not all very familiar with the fatalities and catastrophic suffering caused in the past by the pure evils of “Agent Orange”? The proof is readily available concerning it’s immense toxicity. But as usual there are those who do not care about our health (EPA), only the almighty dollar, or maybe something even more sinister …

The Environmental Protection Agency has refused a petition that aimed to ban the sale of a powerful pesticide linked with cancer — and while already available, a surge in sales is expected as scientists ready a new crop resistant to the chemical.

Not only has the EPA rejected a petition that sought to prohibit the domestic sale of the dangerous 2,4-D pesticide — a key ingredient in Agent Orange — but the main manufacturer of the chemical predicts that sales will skyrocket in the coming months. The reason, it would seem, is that Dow Chemicals is awaiting federal approval of a genetically engineered crop they’ve created that will be resistant to 2,4-D.

If approved, farmers will be able to plant the frankencrop corn variant and douse their fields with the pesticide to eliminate unwanted weeds with greater success. Although 2,4-D isn’t currently used to a large degree on corn fields, all that could soon change for the country’s most successful crop. Opponents argue, though, that the potential side effects of the pesticide are enough to push for a ban on 2,4-D altogether.

The Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmental watch group, has argued that expose to 2,4-D has caused in some cases cancer, hormone disruption, genetic mutations and neurotoxicity, reports the New York Times. In voting not to hear the petition against the pesticide, however, the EPA says that they believe there to be a lack of evidence that would be significant enough to raise suspicion.

“After considering public comment received on the petition and all the available studies, EPA is denying the request to revoke all tolerances and the request to cancel all registrations,” the agency says in their explanation this week.

According to the National Resources Defense Council, the truth behind the toxicity of the chemical is quite the contrary.

“This dangerous pesticide is lurking all over the place – from ball fields and golf courses, to front lawns and farms – exposing an enormous amount of the American public to cancer and other serious health risks,” NRDC senior scientist Dr. Gina Solomon wrote earlier this year. “There’s no reason to continue allowing a toxic Agent Orange-ingredient in the places our children play, our families live and our farmers work. EPA must step up and finally put a stop to it.”

The NRDC is not alone in their opposition, either. The Center for Food Safety has also fought to ban the sale of 2,4-D as Dow develops their pesticide resistant-crop. “Dow’s ‘Agent Orange’ corn will trigger a large increase in 2,4-D use — and our exposure to this toxic herbicide — yet USDA has not assessed how much, nor analyzed the serious harm to human health, the environment or neighboring farms,” the center’s executive director, Andrew Kimbrell, warns. “This novel corn will foster resistant weeds that require more toxic pesticides to kill, followed by more resistance and more pesticides — a chemical arms race in which the only winners are pesticide/biotechnology firms.”

In discussing the seriousness of the consequences, Dr. Amy Dean adds to the Center for Food Safety that “Many studies show that 2,4-D exposure is associated with various forms of cancer, Parkinson’s Disease, nerve damage, hormone disruption and birth defect.”

“Because it poses significant health risk, exposure should not be increased, but significantly reduced to protect the public’s health,” the doctor insists.

The 2,4-D chemical was also instrumental in the formula for Agent Orange, the chemical weapon used by the US during the Vietnam War that is believed to have either killed, maimed or disfigured one million people.

The NRDC had filed their petition to end sales of 2,4-D back in November 2008. After over two years of waiting without response, they sued the EPA in February for not acting quickly enough, Only on April 9, 2012 did the EPA officially announce it would deny the petition. Mae Wu, a lawyer with the group, tells the New York Times that the NRDC was “disappointed that it has taken this long to deny our petition” and also “disappointed that they are not protecting public health by getting this toxic chemical off the market.”
